Impressions of Rouen

The Musée des Beaux-Arts in the center of Rouen celebrates the Impressionists with a spectacular exhibition that continues until September 26: “A City for Impressionism: Monet, Pissarro and Gauguin in Rouen.” The city’s architectural heritage and its natural setting along the banks of the Seine, inspired Pissarro to call Rouen “as beautiful as Venice,” and its attraction to artists reaches back to the Renaissance. The exhibition includes more than 100 paintings from both public and private collections—some of which have never before been displayed—showcase the works of the three famed 19th-century artists. The intricate Rouen Cathedral was painted some thirty times by Monet, who beautifully captured the ethereal light on the stone façade during different times of day.
