The lavender fields of Provence are legendary and a sight worth seeking. Photographers, lovers of fragrance, and culinary aficionados must experience the beautiful fields at least once in a lifetime. One of the best places to view the traditional rows of purple—and one of the most photographed—is the Cistercian abbey, Notre-Dame de Senanque, located in the charming village of Gordes between Aix-en-Provence and Avignon. Founded in 1148, and surviving a tumultuous history, the abbey is now run by a small Cistercian monk community who settled here in 1988. The guided tours are excellent and the gardens of lavender simply breathtaking. A lovely Mass is held every Sunday at 10 a.m.Details:
