Vive le marché! August is the month of abundance, when fresh-picked fruits and vegetables offer a feast for all the senses in the colorful, lively open markets found in most every town in France. Whether provisioning for a picnic or looking to take that perfect French market photograph, no one should miss this quintessentially French experience.
City neighborhoods and villages all have specific market days; travelers just have to ask their concierge or local café owner for the day of the week. The best advice would be to go early, bring cash in small denominations, bring a sturdy bag, wear good walking shoes, and graciously accept the samples being offered—which may include fresh cheeses, cured meats, ripe August melons and figs, and perhaps even the regional pate specialty.
Markets also offer great souvenirs to take home. Local honey, dried sausage, handmade aprons, wooden utensils, soaps scented with local flowers, and much more. For fun and eco-friendly “wrapping,” buy a few kitschy dish towels printed with a local recipe!
